Bio

Romina Shama was born in Switzerland of an Italian Egyptian background.

Her work is very cinematographic. She only uses natural light and analog camera.

"I only use lighting to recreate a window light.
I believe in the feeling of light rather than its technique and I feel the same
about photography.
I started photography with a reporter's camera, the Nikon F3 and never used
another camera.
The first photographers that really interested me were reporters...
...I started reporting for Icon and Gamma agency years before I got into fashion.
I still treat all my subject as if they were in the streets and I only had
a second to shoot them."

After graduating from Central Saint Martin’s School in London and the publication
of her first art book in New York she joined Icon Magazine as a reporter
and became its co-creative director.

As she continued to exhibit her work in art galleries such as Deluxe Gallery
in London, SAKS Gallery in Geneva or Visionairs Gallery in Paris,

the city of lights opened its doors to her and she discovered the fashion world.

Aside from her writing and art directing work for the magazine, she created
an inspirational section based on contemporary art for ICON.

The magazine closed in 2005 and Romina Shama decided to dedicate herself
exclusively to her art.

Her portraits and "still scenarios" which had already appeared in many art
publications were soon adopted by fashion magazines like Numero, Jalouse, Mixte or Elle...

Romina Shama has portraited many french and international artists.
Her work is often referred as timeless.
In a world where the perfect image is omnipresent. What is real seems
to be lost and yet Romina charts an opposite course constantly fighting
against the disembodied pose.
Her film and photographic portraits are less about the object being
photographed than the almost abstract subject who, through Romina’s eye
are in fact looking at us.
